Domestic railways' all-too-familiar problems have left only one in 20
Britons regularly using them for leisure travel, according to
research from Key Note. We're missing out. For all their faults,
Virgin have at least innovated, brought in new trains - and while
spontaneity isn't cheap, booking ahead can make fares affordable.
If this week's crisis does mean the cheap flight bubble deflates like
a Branson balloon, rediscovering European train travel might prove a
pleasant surprise for many. There's a lot to be said for keeping your
feet on the ground.
