By Dennis Schaal
SUNNYVALE, Calif. -- Yahoo confirmed that it purchased travel search-engine vendor FareChase.
A spokeswoman said the acquisition -- the terms of which were not disclosed -- will not impact Travelocity's air, car and hotel sales through Yahoo Travel and that Yahoo will honor FareChase's contracts with its travel partners.
The spokeswoman would not detail how FareChase's shopping technology will be integrated with Yahoo. However, a travel application may blend with Yahoo's strategy to develop its shopping platform, which enables consumers to purchase everything from auto parts to video games.
FareChase's marketing headquarters is in New York and it has a research and development team in Israel. The Yahoo spokeswoman said FareChase's U.S. employees will relocate to Sunnyvale. The spokeswoman was unsure if the relocation would include the employees in Israel.
Yahoo's comparative shopping engine conducts multiple, parallel searches of supplier and online agency Web sites for agents and consumers. FareChase has numerous clients, including Sabre, Worldspan, Orbitz and OutTask.
The Yahoo spokeswoman said her company was attracted to FareChase's technology because of its 'terrific depth and breadth' and because it would help make the travel shopping experience on Yahoo the most comprehensive on the Web"
